A little preparation before fitting day saves time, avoids extra charges and makes a week or two without a kitchen much easier to live with. Here's what to sort out first.
Two to four weeks before
- Check the delivery. Confirm the date and make sure there's somewhere dry to store units, ideally a garage or spare room.
- Book any trades your fitter isn't covering, such as a plasterer or a Gas Safe engineer for a gas hob.
- Order appliances so they arrive before the fitter needs them.
- Agree what's included: removing the old kitchen, disposal, tiling and making good. See what fitting costs.
The week before
- Empty every cupboard and drawer, and clear the worktops.
- Set up a temporary kitchen in another room: a kettle, microwave, toaster and a washing-up bowl go a long way.
- Clear a route from the front door to the kitchen for units and worktops.
- Check delivered units against the order and report anything damaged straight away.
On fitting day
- Know where your stopcock and fuse box are.
- Agree working hours, parking and which toilet the team can use.
- Walk through the plan with the fitter before anything comes out.
How long will it take?
Most full kitchen fits take one to two weeks, longer if walls move or worktops are templated and made to measure. See our kitchen fitting timeline.
